The pieces are made from neem, also known as the Indian lilac or margosa tree, the trees grow readily all over India even in the harshest conditions and they have an amazing ability to withstand air and water pollution.  Neem restores and maintains soil fertility naturally, and pesticides can be made from Neem that are of natural plant origin.  Most houses have a neem tree, and the neem is farmed sustainably throughout India and often used in organic farming.

The pieces are hand carved by a Fairtrade artisan group in India making them a great ethical buy.  Neem wood has a beautiful colour, is durable and strong as well as pest resistance.

The set is made using Fair Trade principles which include payment of fair prices, no child labour, no discrimination in the workplace (gender equality and freedom of association), democratic and transparent trading, safe working conditions, reasonable working hours and long-term direct trading relationships.
